MVGR faculty VR Sankar Cheela was awarded Dual Doctoral degree by IIT Kharagpur – Curtin University
IIT Kharagpur (India) and Curtin University (Australia) awarded joint doctoral degree to research scholar VR Sankar Cheela in Civil Engineering on for his work on “Sustainability Assessment of Waste Treatment Systems-An Indian Case Study”. The research focused on assessing the sustainability performance of waste treatment technologies to accelerate the transition towards integrated waste systems development in Visakhapatnam Smart City. The key outcomes of the research suggest that scientific waste characterization, public-private partnerships, systems engineering applications for decision-making, and the development of an indicator-based performance index are pathways for developing waste systems in Visakhapatnam. With the development of short-term goals (three year), infrastructure and capacity building Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) can achieve the goals of Swachh Bharath Mission 2.0.
Segregation is one of the most important activities that we need to promote and enforce for effective waste management in Visakhapatnam. Educating people to do source segregation at home takes time. For now, if needed, we should do segregation at a central facility and treat waste. The city operates 15 MW (megawatt) waste-to-energy plant, 50-ton bio-gas plant and 40-ton plastic waste recycling plant in the GVMC’s dumping yard in Kapuluppada and three 50-ton compost plants across the city.
Dr. VR Sankar Cheela, is currently working as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Civil Engineering, MVGR College of Engineering (A), Vizianagaram. Apart from his academic work, he is passionate about volunteering and community involvement, focusing on environmental sustainability and personality development.
